Top 10 tips when transporting a car

01

Research

Research is everything - when deciding which car transport services to use, look for a company with an excellent reputation and safety record. If you drive a classic, prestige or sports car, seek out a company that specialises in transporting this kind of high-value vehicle, such as Pro Car Solutions.

02

Type of transporter

Decide on the type of transporter you'd prefer - while an ordinary open transporter is economical, it increases the risk of damage from dirt and road debris, whereas a covered transporter will ensure your car is completely protected from the elements.

03

Insurance

Check the insurance offered by your car transport service - make sure you're covered for all eventualities and check to see if your own insurance covers anything else you might need. Get a copy of your transport or shipping contract and keep it safe.

04

Maintenance

Do any necessary maintenance - check there are no leaks - you could be held liable for any damage to other vehicles from fluid leaks. Check your battery is working as it should, and repair or replace it before transportation if necessary. It's important your car functions properly when it's time for it to be returned, as you may face extra charges as well as an inconvenience if it doesn't.

05

Clean / Inspect

Clean and inspect your car before transporting it - check the bodywork for any dents or scratches, and fix them beforehand. If they cannot be fixed in time, take photos and write down a clear description of the damage, and have the information and images with you when the car is returned so you can check for any additional damage.

06

Keys

Get an extra set of keys cut - the transportation company need a set of keys to drive on and off the transporting truck, and it's best not to give your only pair to anybody else.

07

Personal Items

Remove all personal items from the car - remember to check all compartments and remove your documents and valuables, including any jewellery and portable electronic equipment.

08

Minimal fuel

Leave minimal fuel in the tank - there's always the risk that fuel could leak out during transit, bringing you extra charges, plus the car will weigh more with a full petrol tank. You only need a small amount of fuel, enough for the transport company to drive your car while loading and unloading, so a quarter of a tank of petrol should be plenty.

09

Preparaton

Prepare the outside of the vehicle - shut all the windows and doors, and take off any removable parts, such as an antenna or roof rack. Wrap other loose parts up to prevent damage while in transit. Cover any cracks or openings with electrical or duct tape if necessary. Convertible tops, in particular, should be sealed properly to prevent moisture or dust from entering and damaging the insides.

10

Anti-theft

Turn off your anti-theft devices - they could prevent access by your transport company, and are unnecessary once in transit. An alarm going off without warning could scare the driver while en route and cause an accident.
